This morning year 6 together with Mrs Edwards, Mrs Skelly and myself, Mrs Saye, embarked on a journey back in time. Our current history topic is the 'multifaceted' subject of WW2 and today's 'time travel' supported our recent learning in class.
We arrived well in time and our guide started the tour straight away, introducing us to the various artefacts dotted around the entrance of the museum. The children 'walked' through an Anderson shelter and observed remnants of a wartime bomber engine found off the coast of Swansea.
Once inside the museum, our lady guide told us what 'essentials' were needed to make a 'stay' inside the shelters possible. The hardships of daily lives in those times were effectively demonstrated with a visual display of examples of what was included in a weekly rationed food allowance.
We then went on to slip into 'character', dressing up in various clothes and uniforms, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. The rooms we found ourselves in were furnished with period items and 'tea' was taken in the adjoining 'dining room'.
The pupils also had the amazing opportunity and privilege to hear from and question an evacuee who coincidentally visited the museum this morning. Dennis was evacuated from Swansea during the 'Swansea Blitz' at the age of ten and kindly shared his memories with us.
I think this day will have made a memorable impact on all of us and I hope that the children will have shared some of their experiences from today with you.
