Visit to the Mary Rose, Historic Dockyards Portsmouth
On Monday September 9th, Class 5 set off from school bright and early on our trip to see the Mary Rose as part of our topic work about the Tudors. After a long three hour journey we arrived at the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth and made our way to the brand new Mary Rose Museum.
To end our brilliant trip we had one last workshop.....the Gun Drill. We were taught how to clean, load and fire the cannons and were then split into teams. Each team then had to get the cannon ready, load it and safely fire it just as gun teams would have aboard the Mary Rose....it was great fun!
Once inside we were warmly welcomed by the staff and immediately settled down to our first workshop called "Henry's Heroes". The children learned about the history of the ship and then had great fun dressing up in replica clothing of the ship's officers and crew while looking at and handling many replica artefacts from on board ship.
After our well deserved lunch, we went into the Mary Rose museum and again, were made to feel very welcome by everyone!
It took us ages to look around the museum because there was so much to see - about 20.000 items brought up from the wreck and of course, the amazing wreck itself! We all especially loved the glass lift between the floors of the museum where we had a fantastic view of the whole wreck and the people still working on it!
Seeing all of these amazing exhibits and with the added sound effects all around us, it was like being on board ship ourselves......a fantastic exhibition! To end our brilliant trip we had one last workshop.....the Gun Drill. We were taught how to clean, load and fire the cannons and were then split into teams. Each team then had to get the cannon ready, load it and safely fire it just as gun teams would have aboard the Mary Rose....it was great fun!
After all of our hard work, no trip would be complete without a visit to the shop and with everyone tired but happy we made our way back to the bus and back home to Wales.......some of us more tired than others!!
A huge thank you from Year 5 to everyone who helped make it such a great trip........the staff at the Mary Rose Museum education department, Roy the coach driver and all of our fantastic helpers - Mr.Collingridge, Mr. Phillips, Mrs. Willington, Mrs. Saye and last but not least, Miss Norton.....hope you all enjoyed!
